Financial Aid

NetMath Academic Year term (open enrollment, self-paced, 16-week) courses do not count toward the course load for a particular semester and therefore, do not qualify for traditional financial aid. Our 8-week Summer Semester courses will qualify for most types of financial aid.

High School Students

The Jerry Uhl Scholarship

The Jerry Uhl Scholarship is funded by an endowment from Professor Jerry Uhl and is administered by the NetMath program of the University of Illinois Department of Mathematics. The scholarship is intended to support high school students taking college-level mathematics courses through NetMath. Recipients will be selected by a committee on the basis of financial need, academic potential, and mathematical interest. Each recipient will receive a tuition waiver for a NetMath course.

Eligibility

Illinois high school students who are motivated to study advanced mathematics and demonstrate financial need are invited to apply. Students must fulfill the academic prerequisites for their chosen NetMath course. We welcome applications from the following:

  • Students who are enrolled at a participating NetMath Partner High School
  • Any currently enrolled Illinois high school student interested in taking a NetMath course
Please Note: During 2023-2024, the Jerry Uhl Scholarship will be available only to students taking a NetMath course through the Partner High School Program. The scholarship will reopen to a wider applicant pool during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Important Dates

  • Application period for 2023-24 is Monday, May 8th - Friday, July 21st.
  • Award recipients will be notified a few weeks after the application deadline.
  • Award recipients may register in a NetMath course that will start during the Fall 2023 semester.
  • The course tuition waiver award will be provided for the 2023-24 academic year.

Application Requirements

Each student applicant must complete and submit the Student Application Form. The form requires the following information:

  • Student contact information, including street address and demographic information.
  • Name and contact information for a Parent/Guardian, who will supply the Parent/Guardian Confidential Statement.
    • Note: The Parent/Guardian Confidential Statement will provide the scholarship committee with an insight into the applicant’s financial situation and background. While financial need is not the only factor in making scholarship decisions, more complete information about applicants allows the Jerry Uhl Scholarship funds to be more efficiently distributed.
  • Name and contact information of a High School Teacher, who will supply a recommendation letter in support of the application.
    • Note: The recommendation letter must be typed on school letterhead and signed by the teacher.
  • Name and contact information of the applicant's High School Principal or Guidance Counselor, who will supply a high school transcript and ACT/SAT/AP scores.
    • Note: We require the applicant’s high school transcript and standardized test scores to be submitted by a school official such as the principal or guidance counselor.
  • A Student Essay, which must be uploaded prior to submission of this form.
    • Note: The Student Essay should be a brief essay (typed) of 300 words or less, explaining why the student feels they deserve the scholarship, as well as their future plans for university study. It should be saved as a .pdf file and then uploaded along with the Student Application Form.
